Resignation in the Courtney Clenney Case
Assistant State Attorney Khalil Quinan, the lead prosecutor in the high-profile murder trial involving OnlyFans model Courtney Clenney, has resigned. His resignation follows a ruling by Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Laura Shearon Cruz, stating that Quinan could be deposed due to a violation involving the collection of protected communications.
Violation of Attorney-Client Privilege
Judge Cruz found that the state had improperly gathered texts and emails that were protected under attorney-client privilege. These communications were between Clenney's parents, Deborah Lyn Clenney and Kim DeWayne Clenney, who had legal counsel at the time, unbeknownst to the prosecutors. This significant oversight led to the court's decision to allow Quinan's deposition.
Reasons Behind Quinan's Resignation
Quinan cited the court's ruling, which contained "material errors of fact," as well as his upcoming role as a witness in the case, as the reasons for his resignation. He submitted a memo to Miami-Dade Chief Assistant State Attorney Kathleen Hoague on Monday stating these reasons. Quinan also mentioned his previous plans for paternity leave, which were postponed due to ongoing conflicts with the defense.
Impact on the Prosecution Team
Assistant State Attorney Shawn Abuhoff will take over the prosecution. Abuhoff is familiar with the case, having originally led the prosecution and intermittently covered for Quinan in recent months.
About the Court Case
The case involves the death of Christian Obumseli, who was fatally stabbed in August 2022 at the Miami high-rise residence he shared with Clenney. The defense argues that Clenney was acting in self-defense. A trial date has yet to be determined.
