Concerns Over Privacy for OnlyFans Creators Due to Tax Defaulters List
OnlyFans creators, who can potentially earn as much as €200,000 annually, face significant privacy concerns due to regulations requiring their personal information to be disclosed on the tax defaulters list. This list, updated quarterly by the Revenue, exposes names, addresses, occupation, and details about tax liabilities and penalties for those who owe more than €50,000.
The Impact of Privacy Concerns on OnlyFans Creators
Most OnlyFans content creators work from their residences, frequently located in smaller communities, heightening the risk of being easily identified and potentially harassed. These concerns are exacerbated due to the demographic profile of creators, who are typically in their early to mid-20s, and may lack experience in handling complex tax issues.
Further compounding the anxiety, some creators have faced troubling interactions with certain fans or followers previously, enhancing their fears regarding personal safety.
Revenue's Justification for Publishing Personal Data
The Revenue defends its practice of publishing personal details to prevent any confusion concerning the identity of the individuals on the defaulters’ list. Per their policies, an individual or business’s information is only listed if their outstanding taxes exceed €50,000, penalties are over 15% of the tax owed, and there was no voluntary disclosure of the related financial activities.
Increased Scrutiny on Tax Obligations of Online Influencers
Amid growing scrutiny over tax responsibilities, the Revenue has collected over €3.3 million from audits targeting online influencers and content creators within the last five years. Moreover, the agency has issued more than 450 notices urging voluntary compliance. Revenue strives to align the tax obligations of digital content creators with those of traditional sectors, using details from platforms like OnlyFans and other public data sources to ensure accuracy and fairness in taxation.
OnlyFans' Response to Privacy and Tax Concerns
Despite being approached for a statement on these issues, OnlyFans has yet to provide any formal comment regarding the privacy concerns of their content creators influenced by taxation regulations.
