OnlyFans Under Investigation by Ofcom
Popular content subscription service OnlyFans is currently facing an investigation by the British regulator Ofcom. The probe is centered on allegations that the platform's age-verification procedures were insufficient, potentially allowing underage users to access adult content. OnlyFans, chiefly used by adult performers, allows creators to post their content and retain 80% of the revenue generated.
Details of the Alleged Age Verification Failure
The investigation was prompted by a coding error on the OnlyFans website, which mistakenly set the age threshold for using Yoti's age estimation technology at 20 years, instead of the intended 23. Yoti's technology requires new users to scan their faces, which is then used to estimate their age. If the automatic scan does not conclusively verify the user’s age, they are asked to provide formal identification, such as a passport or driver’s license. This error raised concerns that individuals under 18 could register on the platform.
OnlyFans' Response to the Allegations
In response to the concerns, OnlyFans has reported the issue to Ofcom proactively, stressing the importance of strict age verification processes. The platform highlighted its use of credit card details along with advanced technology to ensure that users meet age requirements, underscoring its commitment to operating within legal and ethical standards.
Potential Consequences if Found Non-Compliant
Ofcom, which possesses the authority to issue fines or enforce service suspensions, is evaluating whether the age threshold of 20 years is sufficient to prevent minors from registering. This issue forms part of a broader initiative by Ofcom aimed at ensuring online platforms hosting adult content adhere strictly to safety measures designed to protect underage users.
