Overview of Kirsty Buchan's Tax Dispute and OnlyFans Involvement
Kirsty Buchan, a former physics teacher at Bannerman High School in Glasgow, has been fined £25,000 by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) for failing to pay a significant tax bill. The total amount overdue amounts to £38,902.37, spanning from April 6, 2022, to April 5, 2023. Buchan generated additional income through OnlyFans, prompting a financial evaluation by HMRC.
Reasons Behind Buchan's Tax Defaults
Buchan ventured into using OnlyFans, a platform known for adult content, due to dissatisfaction with her teaching salary. She describes herself as a "good teacher gone bad" following her resignation in 2022 after pupils accessed her OnlyFans profile. The exposure led her to explore other job avenues, including retail at Tesco and participating as an event elf during the Christmas season.
Financial Earnings Through OnlyFans
According to her statements in the Daily Record, Buchan claimed she could rake in up to £50,000 per month from OnlyFans. However, unauthorized sharing of her images among students propelled her to resign and seek alternative employment to support her financial situation.
Buchan's Response and Future Actions
Facing legal penalties from HMRC, Buchan has voiced intentions to challenge the final calculated amount owed. She asserts that her dispute centers around the penalties and the tax calculation rather than tax evasion. Buchan has promised to settle any finalized tax dues post-dispute.
HMRC's Stance on Tax Compliance
Kevin Hubbard, HMRC's director of individual and small business compliance, emphasized the importance of prosecuting deliberate tax defaulters to ensure fiscal equity and compliance. HMRC plans to publicly list 160 businesses and individuals, including Buchan, who failed to meet tax obligations, potentially exposing their details online for up to a year to encourage adherence to tax laws.
